Illegal Interview Questions
If an employer ever asks a question that skates too close to discriminatory information, you are not obligated to answer! Below is a list of illegal questions with suggested answers.
- It sound like you have an accent, are you a U.S. citizen? Where are you from?
- I am legally authorized to work in the United States and am confident I am able to do this job well.
- Are you married or have children? Will your spouse need insurance? What is your current child care source?
- Everyone in my life is supportive of my career and nothing in my personal life will distract me from giving 100% to this job.
- How old are you?
- I am confident I have the education and experience to do the duties of this job well.
- Do you have any disabilities or health concerns?
- There is nothing in the job description I cannot do with or without appropriate accommodations.
It is not common to be asked these questions and if you do, it’s best to remain calm and use a variation of these answers. An employer asking an illegal question is an early red flag that you may not want to work for this employer. If you are ever unsure if you were asked an illegal question, you can reach out to Career Services for guidance.
