We’ve all heard the saying “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know” or we’ve seen someone land a great job or internship because of their connections. Make no mistake – WHAT you know is super important! But those connections, the WHO you know, can give you the chance to show them what you know and how great you can be!
Networking and fostering meaningful industry connections – getting to know people who might be able to hire you, or might work for (or with) someone who might be able to hire you – is one of the most effective things you can do to achieve/advance your career goals.
Whether you’re seeking advice, looking to gain experience, hoping to give back to your community, or working to broaden your circle for the future, Career Services will give you the tools for effective networking and building professional relationships. Below is a list of practical ways students can begin developing their networking skills and spaces they can network on campus and in the community.

Ways To Start Networking At KCKCC
- Meet with Career Services – Students can begin their networking practice by booking a “Professional Networking” appointment with Career Services. We will help you identify the areas you want to network in, how to write & rehearse an elevator pitch, and help you find places and events to start. Not sure how to book an appointment? - Develop an Elevator Pitch – An elevator pitch is a 30-second (ish) introduction to who you are as a student and/or professional. Check out the article below on “How to Give a Great Elevator Pitch (With Examples)” to get started or refine yours!
- Campus and Community Involvement – Being involved is a fantastic way to make networking connections – without feeling forced! We encourage students to be active on campus through their academic/degree programs, joining clubs and organizations, and attending campus events. Volunteering at organizations that support your career goals is also a great way to develop connections, as well as attending public/community networking events.
- Attend Career Fairs & Other Career Services Events – KCKCC career fairs and employer events are the best place to begin networking! Our employer network recognizes that students are learning and growing professionals, and are eager to hear from you! This is a safe space to practice your elevator pitch, use your resume as a marketing tool, and understand what local employers have to offer you. Check out our upcoming events on our home page.
- Job Shadowing – Although job shadowing opportunities are often unpaid, the professional connections, information, and experience can be a clear starting point for achieving your career goals – building those connections early makes sure that employers think of you when they’re hiring interns or new graduates!
- Staying active on LinkedIn and Other Professional Platforms – Establishing connections in person can be continued/strengthened online, and vice versa – connecting with hiring managers online, then meeting them in person at career fairs or other events. Students are encouraged to connect with other known professionals on networking platforms like LinkedIn and Handshake. Posting your academic and professional achievements is a great low-effort way to market yourself and connect with other professionals.
