Tips For Starting or Editing a Resume
- Your resume has one job – to get you an interview! Build your resume with this in mind – employers should see very quickly why they need to meet you, so the most important/relevant things need to be towards the top, in bold, etc.
- Use the right template! (There are some really bad ones all over the internet!) Below you can find a resource including several resume templates and a cover letter guide to help you get started or enhance the documents you already have.
- Tailor your resume to each position you apply to. How? Pull keywords and phrases from the job description that fit your skills/experience and include these in your resume.
- Highlight your transferrable and professional skills throughout your resume and cover letter.
- Avoid writing full sentences or paragraphs on your resume. Everything should be quick and easy to read on your resume.
- No “I, Me, My” on your resume. Replace these with action verbs to start your bullet points
- DO NOT INCLUDE YOUR PHOTO OR BIRTHDAY/AGE ON YOUR RESUME.
- Keep your resume to one page! Until you have 10+ years of experience, keep it to one page.
